In our first week with Harry, we have learned that we no longer have reason to fear varmits. Although he doesn't bark, Harry will lunge at loose cats, squirrels, bunnies, and even tree stumps. He may not be the smartest guy, but he takes care of us.
No barking! Wow. Now that's a dog. Mason (our Standard Poodle) also lunges at squirrels, robins, bunnies, etc. As he's gotten older, he's started to just feint towards them, then go back to his business, secure in the knowledge that he could never catch them.
Once, when he was younger, he chased a bunny out of the yard, where the bunny jumped through the chainlink fence (I know, we were amazed) and Mason ran smack up against it.
